NHS Pension Scheme

The NHS Pension Scheme (NHSPS) is administered outside the University by the NHS Pensions Agency (NHSPA). For detailed information, please refer to the NHSPS website.

University employees are only eligible to join the NHSPS under the strict conditions outlined below.

If you meet these conditions and  were most recently employed in the NHS in Scotland or Northern Ireland and/or if you have been paying additional voluntary contributions, please contact the Pensions Office.

NHSPS members can contact the scheme online or by using the member helpline 0845 421 4000.

Certain University employees are eligible, under the governing Regulations of the NHSPS, to continue to participate in the NHSPS during their University employment as an alternative to USS and OSPS.

Your eligibility to remain in the NHSPS is conditional upon you satisfying the following criteria:

  • that you are employed in connection with (the purpose of) the Medical School or in a post-graduate institute for medical (or dental) research;
  • that you have been in active membership of the NHSPS within the 12 months prior to your current appointment; and
  • that you complete part 1 of application form SD65 and return it to the Pensions Office within 3 months of starting. This is not a form you have to complete to join the NHSPS while working in the NHS but the NHS Pensions Agency require you to fill it in if you wish to join the NHSPS at the University.

The NHS Pension Scheme introduced a Career Revalued Scheme with effect from 1 April 2015. This is referred to as the 2015 Section. This section applies to eligible joiners, and all members who, at 1 April 2012, were 13 years and 5 months  or more away from their Normal Pension Age (NPA).

Members who are between 10 and 13 years 5 months away from their NPA as at 1 April 2012, will have tapered protection, meaning that at some point, they will become members of the 2015 section prior to retirement.

Members with less than 10 years to NPA as at 1 April 2012, will remain in either the 1995 section or 2008 section of the NHS Pension Scheme until retirement.

The details of the benefits for the various sections of the NHS Pension Scheme can be found from the Scheme guides at NHS Pensions.
